🎯 Back to the Baseline: Build Your Game Right

Fundamentals Fuel Greatness

🛡️ At FOFTA, we believe mastering the basics is the real secret to success, not just in tennis, but in life. Before chasing trick shots or big winners, every player must lay a solid foundation of technical skill. That’s why we start “back at the baseline”—literally and figuratively—to build your game the right way from the ground up.

👣 Ready Position: Be Prepared Every Point

The ready position is the launchpad for every movement on the court. Knees bent, feet moving, weight on the balls of your feet, racquet out in front—this athletic stance keeps you balanced and responsive. A proper ready position prepares your body to move explosively in any direction. Without it, you’re playing catch-up.

🖐️ Grip: The Connection Between You and the Game

Your grip is more than how you hold the racquet—it’s the bridge between your body and the ball. And choosing the right grip is crucial for executing different strokes effectively:

  • Continental Grip 🛡️ – Often referred to as the “universal grip,” this is ideal for serves, volleys, slices, and defensive shots. It gives you versatility and control, especially at the net.
  • Eastern Grip 🎯 – Great for forehands, especially if you’re learning topspin. It allows for a flatter shot with solid control.
  • Semi-Western Grip 🔁 – Very popular among modern players. It generates more topspin, ideal for baseline rallies and high-bouncing balls.
  • Western Grip ⚠️ – Offers extreme topspin but limits versatility, especially for low balls or quick transitions. Not usually recommended for beginners or all-court players.

Understanding which grip to use—and when—can help players maximize both control and power. Coaches at FOFTA help players experiment safely and develop strategies that work best for their individual playing styles.

🏃‍♂️ Footwork: Move Smarter, Not Just Faster

Footwork is often overlooked, but it’s the true engine behind every great shot. Without solid movement, timing, and balance suffer.

At FOFTA, we teach:

  • Split Step Timing 🕐 – A small hop just before the opponent strikes the ball.
  • Recovery Steps 🔄 – Returning to center court or the next best position after each shot.
  • Adjustment Steps 👣 – Quick micro-movements to fine-tune positioning before striking.

Proper footwork turns defense into offense—and keeps you one step ahead.

🎾 Contact Point: Precision in Every Swing

A consistent contact point means more control, better timing, and fewer errors. We teach players to hit in front of the body, with the racquet moving through the intended path, whether it’s a topspin forehand or a slice backhand. It is also essential to track the ball all the way to the racket and keep the head still at contact (try to watch the racket hit the ball and then look to see where it’s going).

Drills using cones or visual cues 🎯 help players develop muscle memory so the contact point becomes automatic, even under pressure.

🛠️ Stroke Mechanics: Small Parts, Big Impact

Each stroke—forehand, backhand, serve, volley—is made up of building blocks:

  • Forehand – Load the legs, rotate the hips, extend through contact.
  • Backhand – Use shoulders for turn, keep the racquet face stable, and follow through.
  • Serve – Focus on toss height, racquet drop (the “scratch your back” position), and upward swing path.
  • Volley – Use short backswings, firm hands, and maintain a forward lean.

FOFTA players learn to refine these small mechanics through breakdown drills, shadow swings, and video feedback.

💬 Coaching Cues That Stick

Short, clear reminders can change a player’s feel immediately. Some of our favorites:

  • “Turn, Racket Set” 🎾 – For early preparation.
  • “Load, Rotate, Extend” 🏋️ – For groundstrokes and serves.
  • “Balance Before Blast” 🧘 – For controlling power through footwork and posture.

These phrases are used consistently throughout FOFTA training for repetition and retention.

🔁 Repetition with Purpose

Great players don’t just hit a lot—they hit with intention. We emphasize:

  • Shadow swings – Practicing strokes slowly without a ball to fine-tune form and develop muscle memory.
  • Wall rallies – Low-pressure reps that improve control and reflexes.
  • Drill variation – Changing tempos, directions, and targets to mimic match conditions.

Repetition builds automaticity. Automaticity builds confidence.

🧠 Mindset Matters: Fundamentals Under Pressure

At FOFTA, we teach players that mastering fundamentals isn’t just physical—it’s mental.

  • Trust the process (Faith) – Real improvement takes time.
  • Learn from mistakes – Every error is a lesson.
  • Progress over perfection – Consistency is better than perfection under pressure.

👧 Adapting Fundamentals for Young Players

Kids need structure, but they also need play. For young athletes, we blend:

  • 🎯 Target games for stroke control
  • 🐸 Footwork games like “Frog Hops” and “Crab Walks”
  • 🗣️ Encouragement focused on effort, not outcome

When kids enjoy the process, they tend to stay in the sport longer and learn more effectively.

💪 Conditioning That Supports Technique

You can’t hit well if your body can’t support the movement. FOFTA’s physical training ensures:

  • Strong Core = Stability through contact
  • Lower Body Power = Drive from the ground up
  • Recovery Routines = Reduced fatigue and fewer injuries

🛡️ FOFTA’s Four-Tenet Training Method

At FOFTA, every technical lesson is connected to:

  • 🎾 Technical Skill
  • 🏃‍♂️ Physical Movement
  • 🧠 Strategic Thinking
  • 💪 Mental Resilience

We don’t just train players to hit—we train them to grow.

🙌 FOFTA Core Values: Building Players—and People

At FOFTA, we believe great tennis is built on more than strokes and strategies. That’s why our training is grounded in four core values that shape how our athletes approach the game—and life.

🎯 Goal Setting

We teach players to set goals with purpose—on the court and beyond. Every drill has direction. Every practice and match has meaning.

🙏 Faith

Faith is trusting the process and helps ground us. Whether it’s faith in your training, your team, or something greater, it builds the resilience to keep going.

🌟 Hope

Hope fuels belief and helps drive players to reach their goals. We encourage players to view setbacks as opportunities for growth and to trust that consistent effort leads to progress.

🔥 Strong Work Ethic

Talent opens doors. Work ethic keeps them open. We develop disciplined habits that last far beyond the final score.
These values are more than ideas—they are the heartbeat of FOFTA. They guide our coaching, shape our culture, and help every player grow into someone who competes with purpose and character.

🏁 Final Rally: Why Fundamentals Win

Mastering the fundamentals is the difference between playing tennis and becoming a tennis player. It’s what transforms raw talent into reliable performance. At FOFTA, we build that foundation the right way, with passion, discipline, and purpose.
